Leading the way is the biggest and best open tournament in Ohio- The Barberton “Battle for the Belt” which is on Saturday, December 20th! For the past 15 years, the “Barberton Battle for the Belt” has been the premier open tournament in the State of Ohio. With eight to nine full sized mats running in two spacious gymnasiums, this event attracts around 600 wrestlers ever year. It has become a sort of mid-season milestone or landmark that your wrestlers can measure the progress all of their hard work has lead to.
Of course, this tournament is truly for wrestlers of ALL experience levels- with Rookie, Youth Open, Junior High, Girls, Masters and MOTHER's Divisions. The rookie division is for first and second year wrestlers only, and gives newcomers to our great sport a chance to experience success against other beginners. This tournament also includes a Girls division for wrestlers from D1 to middle school!
For those who have not attended, be sure you do not miss the crowd-pleasing Tougher MOTHER’s division that this event has featured for the past five years. It could be that you know a mother who would like to literally “throw her hat in the ring.” To the victor go the spoils, and seeing one’s mother compete is undoubtedly a memory that will last a lifetime.
New for 2025- for those of you from the Youngstown Area or just those who would like to see some Pennsylvania Competition-The Brookfield Warrior Rumble is on Saturday (Dec. 20th). This event of course features Rookie, Youth Open & Middle School Divisions. Last year’s event was a huge success, with teams coming in from all over Western Pennsylvania as well as Northeast Ohio, and a similar great event is expected once again this year.
Also new for 2025- OhioQuest is proud to announce the “Mayfield Odd Age Open”. This tournament is part of our ongoing “odd age” series. Odd age tournaments reverse the age divisions, so that wrestlers are not forced to be the “young year” at every single event in a season. This event of course features Rookie, Youth Open & Middle School Divisions.
On Sunday, OhioQuest is back with two more events. For those of you from Central Ohio, the New Albany Youth Open is back after being very well attended and received a year ago. Early registration indicates this event will just build on last year’s success. This event of course features Rookie, Youth Open, Girls & Middle School Divisions.
Final, last but not least, OhioQuest is proud to presents one of the biggest and best events in North Central Ohio every year- The Bellevue “Big Red Machine Trophy Tournament“. This event awards trophies to top three place finishers in the youth open division. This event of course features Rookie, Youth Open, Girls & Middle School Divisions.
Be sure to register for these great events before the deadline! See you this weekend!

It has been brought to our attention several times recently that there are wrestlers who are signing up for Rookie that are not in fact rookie wrestlers, which is defined as 1st and 2nd year wrestlers ONLY. Several points to make here:
1.We ask that you keep in mind that the point of the rookie division is to allow beginners to not get essentially “throw to the wolves” by being pitted against veteran wrestlers that they will have no chance against and will likely drive them out of the sport. In our experience, the parents who wrongly sign their wrestler are usually only thinking about getting their kids more mat time but are blind to affects other wrestlers. Sure, losing is part of the sport and every wrestlers journey, but a fair opportunity to compete is everything. We ask that you please do not take that away from the other kids.
2.If you see something, say something. There are literally thousands of wrestlers who signup for the rookie division at our tournaments each season. As you can imagine, it is impossible to research the background of all of these wrestlers, so this is done on the “honor system”. However, what is possible for us is as a sport to police our own. If you see a wrestler that you know has been competing for more than two years, please bring it to our attention and we will look into the situation and if appropriate, advise that wrestler to move to the open.
Please note that we would need to be notified by 6PM the day before the tournament in order to make changes to the brackets for that specific event.
3. In some cases, your wrestler may be a first- or second-year wrestler, but if your wrestler has gotten a tremendous amount of mat time in that time or maybe just demonstrated an extremely aptitude for the sport (which is a great thing) it may be time to move up to the Open Division. For instance, if you find that your wrestler is pinning and tech falling their way through brackets multiple weeks in a row, it is likely time to move up. Thank you to all for your cooperation and efforts in making our great sport as fair as possible!
